If foreign objects land in the eye, this can be very uncomfortable. Fortunately, you can often simply remove smaller objects yourself. We’ll show you how it works best.

With small foreign bodies in the eye, your body mostly helps itself. Eyelashes, small insects or dust grains can often be easily rinsed out of the eye by the tear fluid. If this does not work, you can carefully help yourself to remove the foreign body.

Safely remove foreign objects in the eye

You are sure that the foreign body only on the surface of your eye lies? Then you can try to carefully remove it. Make sure that you do not rub the foreign body outwards, but wipe it towards the nose to the tear duct. You can quickly get rid of loose eyelashes, for example.

Foreign body under the upper eyelid:

  1. First, wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Now carefully grip your upper eyelid, ideally directly on the lash line.
  3. Lift your eyelid slightly, look down and now wipe the foreign body in the corner of your eye with a cloth or cotton swab.
  4. From there, you can carefully remove it with your fingers or a damp cloth.

Foreign body under the lower eyelid:

  1. Do the same as just described.
  2. The only difference: look up when you remove the foreign body.

Tip: You may find it easier to remove the foreign body in the eye if someone helps you. You only have to look up or down while the other person keeps your eye open and removes the foreign body with a damp cloth.

If the foreign body is only on the surface of the eye, you can rinse it well with water. Even if you don’t dare to look straight into your eye to remove foreign objects, you can try an eye wash.

An eye shower is best suited for this. You can get them either in the pharmacy or in the drugstore. The liquid contained is packaged in an extra sterile manner and is similar to the tear fluid. The solution also has a neutralizing pH. Thereby dries your eye not from how it can happen with tap water, for example. If you don’t have an eye shower on hand, you can rinse your eye with a bottle of still water.

And this is how it works:

  1. Lie relaxed on your back and turn your head slightly to the side so that the water can drain away easily.
  2. Carefully hold your eye open with your fingers.
  3. Now let the water run over your eye from about ten centimeters inside out.
  4. Rinse your eye out for as long as possible. 15 to 20 minutes is enough to clean the surface of your eye.

Eye wash can also in irritated and reddened eyes be helpful.

  • Protect your eyes with one sunglasses against the aggressive UV rays of the sun.
  • Stay as little as possible in smoky rooms – this can irritate the eyes.
  • If you work in the garden or do handicrafts, you should always wear safety glasses. So you can keep your eyes from flying around splinter and protect against chemicals.
  • Make sure that you have adequate lighting at your workplace. This relieves your eyes and prevents them from getting tired.

  • Do not rub your eyes under any circumstances, this can get the foreign body even further into the eye.
  • Cover both the affected and the healthy eye with a clean, germ-free cloth.

You should also see a doctor if you have a strong feeling of a foreign body but cannot see anything in your eye.
